A new study finds that CBD, or cannabidiol, is “remarkably effective” at killing bacteria, at least in a test tube, the researchers in the new study said. CBD was about 20-fold more effective at killing bacterial cell growth compared to standard antibiotics. In contrast, antibiotics are natural chemicals that kill bacteria, which makes them much more toxic and versatile. They are also more toxic to human health.A team of researchers at the University of California, San Diego developed the concept and used genetic engineering to create strains of E. coli bacteria that are genetically engineered to produce CBD. To test its effectiveness against bacterial biofilms, the team introduced the strain to two different types of cell culture and measured how the strains affected the bacterial biofilm.Using a device called a confocal fluorescence microscope, the researchers placed the two strains in the same place, so that they would be in the same room, and then let the bacterial biofilms multiply in the culture medium. In one experiment, they observed how the bacteria reacted when they were exposed to CBD. The researchers observed that, rather than simply washing away, CBD completely eliminated the bacteria. In another experiment, they observed that CBD had no effect on the cells if the bacteria were incubated in the presence of a protease inhibitor.”The use of synthetic CBD to treat bacterial biofilms can be used to demonstrate that this CBD treatment can be more effective than conventional antibiotics,” says Jiao. “As CBD possesses anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties, the data can be used to develop new types of anti-bacterial drugs.”As part of the project, researchers also added the chemical to yeast to see how it would affect them. They tested how the strain reacts to different concentrations of CBD. “Our study found that the use of CBD to treat the biofilm also resulted in improved yeast survival,” says Jiao. “This is because the bacteria need to break down CBD, which causes them to die.
