Sitting here in a cafe feeling appreciation for the simple things. Thinking about and feeling into what it means to pay attention. To pay attention to detail. Attention to the heart of the matter. Attention to what matters to our most human of beings.
I just arrived back from a conference in San Francisco. It was called the Wisdom 2.0 Conference. There we were gathered about 2500 people from all walks of life. Many of us were interested in mindfulness and also in technology. Interested in how the two fields of endeavor could help each other to foster and attend to the real needs of the human being in this day and age. I was touched, moved and inspired by speaker after speaker. The beloved singer-songwriter, Jewel, touched me deeply by the messages she shared through her music and the stories she shared about her life that are reflected in her book Never Broken. Her presence spoke the loudest. I could feel the balance and authenticity she had achieved because of her attention to the details of her heart, mind, body, spirit and soul.
As I have been moving through the challenges and unknowns that have come with a winter of extreme weather in the Santa Cruz mountains, I have had cause to STOP. S – step back, T – take a deep breath, O – observe, P – proceed mindfully. Intense rains, severe road damages and closures, friends suffering moderate to severe damage to their homes, properties and businesses including some losses of privately owned water systems – when it rains it pours.
I’d like to think that I am capable of bouncing back from anything. I am. I am. Yet, I only am if I am willing to let go of holding onto things the way they have been. I have had to let go of the familiar in order to keep going. When the roads to work no longer function, what to do? Panic, quit, get afraid, take a vacation, cry, suck it up, get creative, pay attention to detail, keep going. Likely keep going into an expression of life and work that is ripe with new possibilities. I’m coming around to the other end of things now slowly but surely.
The rains will settle soon, the recovery of damages will get completed and I will STOP again and appreciate the details. People, places and things will be different partially because of the effects of the weather yet also because now I am different. I am in love with a life that is there for me through thick and through thin. I am in love. I am in love with the message I keep hearing deep down: “There is a big picture unfolding. Be patient. Pay attention to the details of your heart, mind, body, spirit and soul. You are important. All of you are important. You belong to each other”.
